Recorded Sept. 30, 2007. Mom talks about when her dad died, about a month before her 12th birthday. Her mom is emotional and angry, and shuts herself away much of the time, turning away a railroad employee at the door who supposedly wanted to pay her something for damages. Mom remembers going to the funeral and being amazed by all the cars that followed, and her mom admonishing her for counting all the cars. (Thatâs bad luck she said.) The next year, she remembers her grandmother uncharacteristically wandering off one day, perhaps becoming feeble, wanting to see her brother in Chicago. It seems a dying wish: her mom sends her âother motherâ to Chicago, where âothâ died shortly later. She is buried in a cemetery in Cincinnati, but mom couldnât find the gravesite one time she looked with Bob.
